Becsta.COM: My Photography Addiction
Yes, yes, a Geekgrrl must have cool toys, right? The coolest toys of them all have to be digital cameras. You can take ‘em anywhere, shoot almost anything, then pop on home, and post-process to your hearts content! The final step is to upload said creations into a sexy Gallery.
As a Geekgrrl who collects cool toys, I have both of the above
My first camera was a dinky little Nikon Coolpix 800. It was a great little point-n-shoot affair, which I took along on a trip over to Perth. My mode of transport on the way back was a ride I’ll never forget, a first class berth on the Indian Pacific - three and a half days on the train, a couple of hours up in the cab with the driver and observer, lots of plonk and rum, and hundreds of photos.
My next camera was another great camera - the Nikon Coolpix 990. It had a unique swivel design which the lens was contained in, 3 megapixels, and it lasted a good four years or so. One of my first photos with the 990 was a beauty:
In 2005, I was selected to compete in the International One Metre World Championships, being held up in Mooloolaba, Queensland. Competing with my little Disco IOM over seven days was another life event, especially because I was (in a way) representing my country. Before I left for the Worlds, I reluctantly gave my 990 to my sister, and bought a new Nikon D70s SLR camera. Again, I took lots of photos of the event, and started to really enjoy the photography as a hobby.
I somehow started taking ice hockey photos upon my return to Sydney, and some of them turned out ok.

One thing leads to another, I bought a proper photo printer, lots of ink, lots of paper, bought a few photo editing tools, was forced to work out a reasonably efficient photography workflow (after taking over 4 gig of photos, one has to process them…), and somehow managed to become an official AIHL photographer.

When the Nikon D200 was released, I knew I was going to get one, ‘coz every GeekGrrl has to have one. So just recently, I trundled down to the photography store, stumped up the cash, and walked away with one. It’s big, fast to focus, has cleaner ISO than my D70s, and I love it!
Mum looked wistfully at me, and said “What are ya gonna do with your existing one?”.
Umm, I’m gonna use it mum
During Ice Hockey game shoots, the D70s will have my 50mm lens on it for portrait and static photos, and my D200 will have a nice new 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens on it for the action photos
Only problem now is, I’ll have to improve my post-processing workflow even more, now that I’ll be processing 8gig+ of photos after each shoot… *sigh*
The things a Geekgrrl has to live with these days….
